LPG prices increase by 6%, LPG Marketers want taxes on product scrapped

The LPG Marketers Association of Ghana is calling on the government to scrap taxes imposed on the product in order to ease the pressure on consumers.

According to the Vice-Chairman of the association, Gabriel Kumi, they will have no option but to pass on the extra cost to consumers anytime there is an increase.

Prices of various petroleum products have seen a surge in recent times following the continuous depreciation of the cedi and happenings in Ukraine after Russia’s invasion.

Speaking to Citi News, Gabriel Kumi said the government’s aim to double the household use of LPG may not be achieved due to the high cost of the product.

“The cost of LPG has gone up and that will mean that at the pump, the consumer would have to pay more. As of the end of February, the price of a kilo of LPG was GHS 9.3. It has currently shot up by about 6%.”

“Effective March 1, 2022, we saw a kilo of LPG being sold at between GHS 9.8 and GHS 10. What has happened is that the cost price of the product has gone up? We can’t help but shift it to the consumer” he noted.

He indicated that the Association has made several calls to the government to consider renewing the taxes on LPG.

“We believe LPG must be tax-free,” he added.
