The parliamentary candidate for NPP Asunafo South in interview with ahafonews.com have voiced out that ‘i must be brutally honesty. I have always not commented on security issues and always stood on the side of the security services for the great job they do for this country. They are prepared to sacrifice their lives to protect the state. A commitment that makes them living martyrs in my humble opinion.

I must however be truthful to state that the actions of some security personnel have left many well meaning Ghanaians devoid of partisan politics to question the professionalism associated with some of these actions and/or inactions.

The Ejura shootings have left me wondering as to how and why live bullets/ammunition should be used to disperse a crowd of civilian protestors. My firm opinion is that, no amount of justification would successfully defend the use of live bullets against fellow innocent Ghanaians. What happened to rubber bullets, tear gas, pepper spray etc?

From first principles, it is well known that live bullets kill. The fact that, Soldiers live by the mantra ‘kill or be killed’ does not mean that they can take the lives of other Ghanaians into their hands. This mantra is applicable only during combat with the enemy or during war. Are we at war?

When Floyd was killed in America by a white police officer by choking, we all raised our voices to shout in Unison that ‘Black lives Matter’. Racism against blacks was raised. Is it not shameful to see two fellow Ghanaians killed by Ghanaian Soldiers? This is two Floyds. We must get serious. Ghana is all we have.

Even If the argument against the protestors were to be that, they assembled unlawfully and engaged in an unlawful protest without permission, it should not warrant an instant death sentence.

Let nobody politicise this. What is wrong is wrong. We cannot be under the threat of live bullets from soldiers who are paid by tax payers.

It must also be noted by the citizenry of this country that, when you pelt stones at the security forces, by their training suggests they will respond perhaps with measure above proportion to the pelting.

Furthermore it is clear that, if you are in a crowd of protesters and you are not in possession of any assault weapon you could still be injured or killed by security forces due to the disproportionate force they may apply.

If we want to live peacefully in this country and strive for development, we must all abide by the laws of the land. With this in mind, let us avoid situations that have the potential to erupt into violence.

Although I am disgusted and disappointed by the turn of events in Ejura, I find some solace and hope for the bereaved in that, our able President has tasked Hon. Ambrose Dery to constitute a public Enquiry to report on this unfortunate incident within 10 days as per a communique issued by Eugene Arhin. The report ultimately cannot bring back the lost lives but it should bring forth policies that will ultimately prevent our security forces from using live ammunition in dispersing civilian crowds/protestors.

he finally send his condolence to the bereaved families.
I send my sincere commiserations to the bereaved families. I wish the severely injured a speedy recovery and I pray we don’t witness this again.

We pray for Peace, better Healthcare, Development and jobs (PHDJobs)

Peace,
Kind Regards
Hon. Ing. Kobby Amoa-Mensah
