10 people have been arrested by the Sanitation Taskforce in Secondi-Takoradi in the Western Region for defecating openly.

In a statement from the Secondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, the persons were arrested for defecating in some public areas in the metropolis.

The arrest, according to the assembly, is to ensure a hygienic environment for the people to live in and deter others from doing so.

“The Environmental Sanitation Taskforce of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly on Thursday, March 10, 2022, arrested ten (10) persons for defecating in some public places in the metropolis. The arrest is in accordance with the Assembly’s effort to reduce open defecation in the metropolis so as to ensure a clean and hygienic environment for its people.”

The persons were given a spot fine of GH¢200.00 each as a lesson to refrain from public defecation.

Those arrested were nabbed within the Tanokrom, Ngyeresia and Kokompe areas.

“Each culprit was fined a spot fee of GH¢200.00 after which they were strongly cautioned to refrain from such practices or risk prosecution next time.”

The Health Officer for the metropolis, Mr. Abdul Karim Hudu said the Assembly is ready to work to eradicate such menace, and it would keep arresting and fining people if need be.

“The Assembly’s commitment to eradicate open defecation in the metropolis, hence the taskforce will continue to arrest and fine or prosecute any persons caught open defecating.”
