Ghana head coach, CK Akonnor has revealed why Asante Kotoko goalkeeper, Razak Abalora has been excluded from his 30-man provisional squad for the upcoming 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

Akonnor on Friday named the provisional squad for the doubleheader against Ethiopia and South Africa in September 3 and 6 respectively.

Abalora, who is a former WAFA shotstopper until the latest call-up – was a consistent member of Akonnor’s team.

The Asante Kotoko first-choice goalkeeper has been under heavy criticism at both club and national team levels for committing errors which has cost his team.

Explaining the decision to drop Abalora, Akonnor said the goalkeeper needs a break t wake up but not entirely put of his team.

“Abalora is part of the team, he is not out,” he said when he announced his 30-man provisional squad.

“Sometimes, you need that break to wake up and know that there is a big deal going on.

“He is still part of our team, he is not out,” he added.

In Abalora’s absence, Akonnor settled on Richard Ofori, Richard Attah, Manaf Nurudeen and Lawrence Ati-Zigi as the goalkeepers for the two games
