Ahafo news can report that a 74 year old man by name Akwasi Armah has drowned in the Tano River which separates Sefwi Asanwinso from Asanwinso Adwumamu on Sunday the 28th November 2021.

Asawinso In Asunafo South is a town on the border with Sefwi defined by the riverine body. According to our research, the deceased had traveled to a nearby town for a funeral and drowned on his way back. The standard mode of commuting from Asawinso in Asunafo South to the Sefwi town is by a mini canoe which could also be called a ‘Dingy’. Sources indicate that the deceased decided to man the dinghy on his own after the funeral rites. It is on his venture back home that the sad event occured. Speculations are that, he might have fallen into the river upon trying to traverse the River in the mini canoe.

The Assembly member for the Asawinso Adwumamu Electoral Area Hon. Justice Manu indicated that, the local community got wind of the non return of a community member, leading to a community search. In the search, they found belongings of the deceased at the bank of the river. This led them to report to the police, after which a local divers team was commissioned to search for the body of the mising person. They found the body lifeless in the river and thereafter reported to the police.

Although no foul play is suspected now, our team finds it bizarre that he would have left his personal belongings on the bank to embark on thiis futile trip home.

The rampant unreported deaths on water bodies locally is a major source of worry in our local communities and questions have been raised as to why no safer modes of transport have not been provided for such communities which are poor.

These are the real issues facing our people in Ahafo and have always gone unreported and we hope such problems will be attended to by political and traditional leaders.
