Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum has said the National Food Buffer Stock has assured him that they will supply foods to the various Senior High schools that are reopening.
Dr Adutwum explained that the Buffer Stock company which is under the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, is solely responsible for the supply of foods to the schools and then get paid by the Ministry of Education.
It is recalled that the Conference of Heads of Assisted Schools in the Upper West Region earlier said in a statement following an emergency meeting held at the Queen of Peace Senior High School in Wa that there there are food shortages in all schools in the region.
According to CHASS, this was caused by the refusal of local suppliers’ to supply food items to the various schools.
“It came out that the food suppliers contracted by Buffer Stock Company and those local suppliers contacted to help out are all refusing to supply due to non-payment of outstanding monies owed for food supplied to the schools. This has led to serious food shortages in all the schools in the region. In fact, an assessment of the situation indicated that most schools cannot go beyond one week if nothing urgent is done about it.”
But speaking in an interview with Alfred Ocansey on the Ghana Tonight show on TV3 Wednesday August 17, Dr Adutwum who is also lawmaker for Bosomtwe said “I am not in charge of food distribution across Senior High Schools but the Buffer Stock gave me the firm assurance that the schools that are opening will get food items to keep the students fed.
“I had a meeting with Buffer Stock Company, food is supplied by buffer stock, the Buffer Stock which is under the Ministry of Agric is the one that provides the foods to the schools and then we pay them.”
