The Coastal Development Authority (CODA) has attributed the delay in the completion of most of its infrastructural projects to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to CODA, 129 out of 1,400 of its projects have been completed since the contracts were awarded in the year 2019.

Touting the infrastructural achievements of CODA during a press briefing in Accra, its CEO, Jerry Ahmed Shaib assured of adequate measures to complete numerous projects that were stalled due to the pandemic.

“Our major bane has been COVID-19. When we started, we actually had the warrant, which is the commencement certificate to initiate projects in 2019. We are also a new Authority that started in 2018. Most of my Directors are from other institutions, so there were processes that we had to go through. Just when we completed the procurement issues, the COVID-19 reared its ugly head. So that delayed the process for almost a year.”

He also outlined plans to partner with key stakeholders in the implementation of the CODA clean beach campaign, which seeks to tackle the insanitary conditions along the beaches.

“We intend to build the capacity of local community-based partners to regularly clean their beaches and process waste materials to usable raw materials for recycling purposes. We are doing this in partnership with the Kantanka group as we speak. They have worked on something that will shred all the plastics and we are hoping to have that all over the country. We are also to provide infrastructure for reducing the amount of plastic waste deposited at the beach. We are doing this with all MMDCEs and other stakeholders to support the campaign, which will have private sector support in its implementation.”

The regional breakdown of the projects are as follows:

Western North Region, (125 projects), Greater Accra Region (380 projects), Central Region (412 projects) Oti Region (107 projects), Volta Region (229 projects) and final Western Region (220 projects).

These projects include drainage systems, health facilities, bridges, roads, water systems and sanitation projects.
