Community in crisis: Sankore - Asunafo South Faces Challenges of Discord and Despair
Once upon a time, in the vibrant town and District of Sankore – Asunafo South, unity and harmony prevailed among families during the late 1990s. Families lived together as one, sharing meals and laughter. They entertained themselves with lively performances such as Concert party, mpenempenaa, Antoakyire, and pampanaana. Sports also played a significant role, with football games between local giants Asanteman and Freeco from Sankore capturing the community’s spirit.
However, as the early 2000s dawned, a dark cloud descended upon the town, dividing families along political lines of NDC and NPP. What was once a tight-knit community became fragmented as political affiliations tore relationships apart. Family members turned into enemies, resulting in brutal acts of violence due to differing party loyalties. The peace that once characterized Sankore began to crumble, leaving some residents homeless and causing the loss of life and property.
Tragically, prominent figure like “Nyame Kwame” lost his live due to the escalating political tensions. The situation worsened in 2007-2008 with a rise in drug abuse and alcoholism. The youth, influenced by their surroundings, turned to substance abuse, leading to the emergence of hooligans like Akiida and Akayida. These individuals aligned themselves with political parties, using destructive tools and weapons to further fuel the violence that plagued the town.
With limited job opportunities and lack of development in the constituency, many young people resorted to illegal activities such as logging, leading to a cycle of wealth for some and tragedy for others. Today, Sankore faces a crisis of drug addiction among its youth, with alarming rates of drug abuse, mass Unemployment and teenage pregnancies in various neighborhoods stretching from sankore Zongo through to Bo)timu to Abrokan to Nfantimi, Asantemanase to Jomasemu to Methodistmu to Komfourkrom, Maame “U” sawmill to Pentecostmu and Osofo B)g3 area.
Amidst this turmoil, Sir Phylose, a passionate youth activist from Ahafo Sankore, speaks out against the destructive path that Sankore has taken. He calls on political leaders, opinion leaders, Nananom and philanthropist to address the root causes of these issues and provide opportunities for the youth to thrive. My words serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of unity and community in the face of adversity.
As the town grapples with its challenges, the echoes of past harmony linger, a reminder of what once was and what could be again if the community unites to overcome its troubles. The future of Sankore Asunafo South hangs in the balance, waiting for a new chapter to be written, one of hope, reconciliation, and progress.
