The Christian Council of Ghana has praised the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his unfettered appreciation of Ghana’s religious diversity despite his strong grounding in the Islamic divide.

General Secretary of the council, Rev. Dr. Cyril Fayose while introducing the Vice President as the Special Guest of Honour at the opening ceremony of the Ghana Youth Congress at Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region on Tuesday said he gets sometimes “confused” to situate Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia within a religious bracket due to his all-embracing attitude towards all faiths and to the Christian community in particular.

“Sometimes I get confused, whether he is a Christian or a Muslim, but whatever the case is, he is a friend of the Church. And when we invited him to this programme, he readily said Yes; that shows his love for the church as well as for young people”, Dr Fayose said.

The Ghana Youth Congress is organised by the Christian Council of Ghana as a precursor to the upcoming African Youth Congress to be organised under the auspices of the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC), under the theme, “Ghana, My Home, My Future”.

The Congress is aimed at engaging the youth to build up moral character, explore the opportunities that exist in Africa and help disabuse their minds about the supposed greener pastures beyond the Mediterranean, which in many cases coerces them into illegal migration and deaths on the high seas and deserts.

According to the General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, the Vice President was chosen as the Special Guest for the programme because “He is one person who believes in Ghana and believes that Ghana can make it. He believes that Ghana can be our future”.

On his part, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia assured the youth delegates that Government will continue to explore ways to help them develop their talents and capabilities and provide the enabling environment to meet the growth aspirations of all citizens

He also implored them to stay focused and have the mindset of possibilities.
