The Chief of New Sawreso-Seinuah a passionate environmentalist has appealed to stakeholders in the Ahafo Region to protect our forest and river bodies.

In an interview with Ahafo News, he congratulated the Current government for initiating the tree planting project underare you the auspices of the Forestry Commission of Ghana. He however bemoaned the rapid rate at which illegal chainsaw operators are depleting our Forest reserves.

‘Our forests have my benefits. Our ancestors bequeathed the forest to us to enjoy the benefits. If we destroy what they left us, our descendants will have nothing to benefit from’ according to Katakyie Nana Agyemang Duah lll Of New Sawreso-Seinuah.

To this end, he intimated his plans of working with stakeholders and his community to protect the forests in his traditional jurisdiction and also to encourage other chiefs to seek the Protection of the forest.

The rampant and rapid deterioration of forest reserves in Ahafo is a worrying trend which the authorities have to take a serious look at.

Illegal chainsaw operators have depleted forest resources to the chargrin of many local residents. The apprehension and silence of many is a cause for worry any government. Some residents have attributed the continuous degradation of our forests to bad political leadership. Some accuse political leaders having a stake in these illegal activities, this their fear to voice misgivings. Others also accuse traditional Rulers for not seeking the interest of their people. The officials of the Forestry Commission are also accused by some residents for failing to let the applicable rules work to safeguard the forests.

Taking all of these into consideration, there is one fact. The fact is that our forests are being depleted and there are genuine fears of the consequent effects on future generations.

It is for the sake of future generations that Katakyie Nana Agyemang Duah lll is calling for all to seek to protect our forests.

To save our future generations, we need a wholistic approach to save our forests because if the last tree dies the last man dies.
