No Ghanaian student will be deported; fees would be paid in 14 days – Registrar of Scholarships

The Registrar of Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, Kingsley Agyemang has revealed that plans are far advanced for the Finance Ministry to release funds for the payment of the fees and stipends of the stranded Ghanaian students studying abroad on Government of Ghana (GOG) Scholarship.

He explained that it is not exactly so that the government has refused to pay the fees of about thousand Ghanaian students studying abroad and indicated that the government has payment protocol arrangement on quarterly bases with some of the schools.

Kingsley Agyemang told Alfred Ocansey on 3FM Sunrise that the picture painted by Daily Graphic is not exactly so. There are few schools where students are facing some kind of challenges. The tuition fee for the 2022 academic year is still outstanding and the secretariat is waiting for a letter of clearance to be issued.

“We should give ourselves about fourteen days from today and payments would be made. Hopefully, the Finance Ministry will release funds. We are in touch with all the institutions across the globe and I can tell you the discussions have been very fruitful” he mentioned

Tuesday 21 June, 2022 edition of Daily Graphic reported “Students on government scholarship face hardship. More than thousand Ghanaian students studying on government scholarships in about 20 countries have been blocked out of their school portals due to failure to their fees and stipends”

The paper further reported that most of the stranded students perform menial and hazardous jobs to the extent of working 40 hours a week instead of the 24 hours a week as permitted by the status. It also stated that some of the students face deportation.

But the Registrar of Ghana Scholarship Secretariat has assured that no student has been deported. I can assure that no student of ours will be deported. The processes have begun and we expect that the monies would hit the students’ accounts by fourteen days
