Unseeded Samuel Nyemekye worked his way through to the Tennis Foundation Ghana (TFG) International Tennis Federation (ITF) Accra J5 Open Semi-finals after overcoming tournament No.5 seed Ange-Kevin Koua from Canada.
Nyamekye won 6-3,6-1 on Thursday morning at the National Tennis Centre,Accra.
The 17-year-old Ghanaian had a tough first set but managed to sail through with a 6-3 win and made a big improvement with a 6-1 win in the second set.
In an interview with ghanatennis.org Samuel Nyemakye said, “ I am very happy to advance to my first ITF semifinals, I will do everything possible to make my first finals.
“I want to use this opportunity to thank Tennis Foundation Ghana for the organization for this ITF tourney. Secondly my club the Sakumono Tennis Club and coaches for their support.”
Samuel Nyemekye will face Carl Holder of France in the semifinals on Friday at 8:00 GMT.
Nyamekye’s compatriot, Desmond Ayaaba lost 6(4)-7, 4-6 to No.4 seed, Hod’abalo Isak Padio of Togo.
Desmond had a tough day as he and his doubles partner, Adrian Daniel of Israel lost 2-6,3-6 to Lucas Phanthanlala of France and Ange-Kevin Koua of Canada.
Ghana’s pair of Yakubu Abubakari Lea and Kenneth Adzokatse could also not make it into the semifinals after losing 2-6,1-6 to Carl Holder of France and Hod’abalo Isak Padio of Togo.
