Tuesday, July 20, 2021, will be observed as a public holiday as Muslims celebrate the Eid-ul-Adha festival, the Ministry of Interior has announced.

Eid al-Adha often referred to as the Festival of Sacrifice is one of two official holidays celebrated within Islam.

The festival honours the willingness of Ibrahim [Abraham] to sacrifice his son Ismail as an act of obedience to God’s command.

Before Ibrahim could sacrifice his son, however, Allah provided a lamb to be sacrificed instead.

In commemoration of this intervention, Muslims all over the world celebrate Eid-ul-Adha annually.

According to a release from the Ministry of Interior last Thursday, tomorrow will be observed as a public holiday.

Below is the release from the Ministry:

The general public is hereby informed that Tuesday, 20th July 2021 which marks Eid-ul-Adha, is a Statutory Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.

Signed

AMBROSE DERY (MP)

MINISTER FOR THE INTERIOR

Issued in Accra this Thursday, 15th July 2021
