The Ashanti Regional Police Command of the Ghana Police Service has refuted the allegation that some of its officers have assaulted students at the Kumasi Girls’ Senior High School (KUGISS).

On Monday, some students of the school demonstrated in disagreement to a decision by the Ghana Education Service (GES) communicated by the head of the school not to allow them to go home for the mid-semester break.

The protesting students say some were assaulted by the Police and Military officers that trooped to the school to calm things.

“They came to our dormitories. They came beating some people. Even my dormitory they beat them to the extent that some were bleeding,” one student said on anonymity.

Surprised by the news going around, the Ashanti Regional Police Command has come out with a release to set the records straight.

“It is also untrue that the military was involved in bringing the situation under control. The only military officers who were present at Kumasi Girls Secondary School were part of a joint patrol team who were close to the school and had gone there to verify what was happening,” the release signed by Acting Regional Commander, DCOP David Agyemang Adjem has said.

Meanwhile, a similar protest at the St. Louis Senior High School reportedly saw students also being assaulted by officers.

Reacting to that allegation too, the Ashanti Regional Police command says it is untrue.

“The respective heads of the schools have been to the Police to thank us for our prompt intervention and so we find it strange for anyone to report in the contrary.

“We shall endeavour to protect each and every person in the Region as well as their property.

“The Command will like to assure the general public that the stories and videos are false, untruths and a fabrication to bring the Police Service into disrepute and we condemn this action in no uncertain terms,” the release from the Police adds.
