Some 22 CSOs have come together under Coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) working towards the promotion of good governance, Human Rights and Public Accountability calling on the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to take charge of the inquiry into the recent disturbances at Ejura-Sekyedumase as they accuse the Interior Ministry of being complicit in the violence.
Following the unrest in Ejura, the Interior Ministry under the orders of President Akufo-Addo has set up a three-member Committee of Inquiry to investigate and come out with findings on the death of three persons and the injured ones.
Although the CSOs totaling 22 different organisations say they commend the President, they have through a joint press release raised concern over the involvement of the Interior Ministry in the inquiry.
“While we commend the President for directing swift investigations into this matter, we are concerned that the use of the Interior Ministry in conducting investigations into matters which involve agencies acting under the authority of the Ministry may compromise the fairness and integrity of its findings.
“The Ministry of Interior which may have been complicit in the handling of this unfortunate incident at Ejura Sekyedumase cannot be judges in their own cause,” part of a release from the CSOs reads.
According to them, CHRAJ should be the right body to take up the inquiry as they deal with the violation of human rights, something denied civilians in the case of the Ejura-Sekyedumase mayhem.
“It is only proper that an independent body conducts investigations into this matter. In this respect, we call on the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) under whose mandate this matter which involves excessive abuses of human rights squarely falls, to thoroughly investigate this incident and cause the criminal prosecution of all persons found culpable,” the joint press release from the CSOs add.
Meanwhile, the CSOs are calling on the youth of Ejura Sekyedumase, and indeed, all Ghanaians to remain calm and exercise restraint as the investigation into the matter continue.
