It is with great disappointment that I address the lack of developmental projects in my constituency under the leadership of Hon. Eric Opoku, the Member of Parliament for Asunafo South constituency. Despite serving for nearly 16 years and holding various ministerial positions, such as Bono, Ahafo, and Ashanti Regional ministers, our constituency has not seen any significant progress under his tenure.

What is most disheartening is that Eric Opoku hails from the same town with me, Sankore, a town known for producing intellectuals. However, recent research has revealed that approximately 50% of our youth who graduate from senior high school are involved in drug abuse like smoking of weed, cigarettes, Laka, Oboy Luku, sniffing glue and others. This is due to lack of employment opportunities and the absence of factories or companies where they can find gainful employment.

Even those who resort to lumbering, a common occupation in our area, often meet untimely deaths due to unsafe working conditions. It is truly saddening to see our youth struggling to make ends meet and resorting to drug abuse or hazardous jobs simply to survive.

We must ask Eric Opoku, is it satisfying for you to see the youth of our constituency constantly begging for small sums of money whenever you visit? Wouldn’t it be more fulfilling to establish meaningful industries that can provide them with sustainable livelihoods? What will you be proud of in your hometown after your service as an MP, aside from your money-sharing activities?

There are some who argue that Eric Opoku has set up secondary schools, nursing training college, and extended electricity to smaller towns within the constituency. However, we must question whether these initiatives are enough to consider our constituency better off. Other parliamentarians across the country are actively improving the lives of their constituents, so why are you lagging behind?

We implore Eric Opoku to reflect on his responsibilities as a representative of the people. The youth deserve better opportunities, and it is his duty to prioritize our well-being over personal gains. We expect our Member of Parliament to take immediate action to address these pressing issues and prioritize the development of our constituency. Our future depends on it, and it’s time for Eric Opoku to step up and fulfill his obligations to the people he represents.
