Youth of Ahafo Kenyasi Number 2 in the Ahafo region are agitating against unfair treatment by Newmont Ghana which operates Ahafo Mines located on the lands of these indegenes.

The youths of the newly created Ahafo region especially Kenyasi Number 1 and 2 are currently struggling with employment opportunities. It has however become apparent that most of the skilled and technical jobs are being offered to non citizens of Ahafo. The apparent reason for this according to unofficial sources is as a result of the lack adequately skilled personnel from the mining communities. This proposition is undesirable and shows the abject failure of the NGGL to adhere to adequate representation of locales in it’s workforce.

One would have thought that, the mining company would ensure a policy of prioritization applied to employ graduate students who hail from the mining community and secondarily from the wider ahafo Region.

Our research shows widespread agitation amongst natives withing the mining commnities due to the perceived lack of seriousness of NGGL in meeting corporate social responsibilities. We will bring further details on these agitations from the communities.

Ahafo news has sighted recent communication by Executives of Youth Association of Kenyase No 2. In the communique, the youth umbrella seeks to address some issues they seem to be discriminatory which are being perpetuated against the natives of the mining communities.

The current recruitment of National Service personnel at NGGL has raised eyebrows. To the chagrin of many, NGGL has overlooked the availability of locale graduates available to be recruited and selected non residents. The youth association is this currently embarking on the collation of data on all natives who have not been offered appointments by the mining company.

It will be interesting to know the percentage of Ahafo natives employed at NGGL for National Service placement and how this reflects their commitment to developing the human resource base in Ahafo.

The General Secretary of the Kenyase No. 2 Youth Association has requested that all graduates who have been refused placement should send photocopies of their evidence latest by Friday, 15th October, 2021.
