Nsoatreman FC beat Tamale City FC on Tuesday in Accra to secure historic promotion to the Ghana Premier League.
The Brong Ahafo club needed an extra-time winner to secure a 2-1 victory at the Accra Sports Stadium and achieve top-flight football for the first time.
Nsoatreman FC and Tamale City met in a play-off after finishing the season with the same points total and head-to-head record.
Tamale City, led by former Black Stars midfielder Hamza Mohammed, were confident of becoming the second club from the Northern Regional capital in the Ghana Premier League after Real Tamale United, but they faced a difficult opponent in Nsoatreman, who secured a deserved win with an impressive performance.
After 56 minutes, Samuel Ofori broke the deadlock with a close-range strike to give Nsoatreman the lead, but it lasted only seven minutes as Tamale City equalised. Bismark Asare stepped up and calmly slotted home a penalty awarded by referee Daniel Laryea.
Neither team could find a winner in regulation time, forcing extra time. Charles Asante scored the winning goal for Nsoatreman in the 98t minute.
Nsoatreman join Kotoku Royals and Samartex as promoted teams, while Elmina Sharks, WAFA, and Techiman Eleven Wonders have been relegated.
