Vigilantism: I Hope NDC, NPP Will Listen – Rawlings Reacts To 2019 SONA

Former President, Jerry John Rawlings has described President Akufo-Addo’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) as ‘disarming’.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Thursday delivered the third State of the Nation Address (SoNA) – since he assumed office on January 7, 2017 – before Parliament this morning.

The address is in accordance with Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution, which states that “The President shall, at the beginning of each session of Parliament and before the dissolution of Parliament, deliver to Parliament a message on the state of the nation.”

President Akufo Addo spoke on several issues in the economy including the canker of vigilante groups which is causing mayhem in the country.

He called on the two major political parties in the country; the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to disband any vigilante group associated with them. Failure to do this, he will institute laws which will deal with vigilante groups.

In a tweet, former President Rawlings hoped the two political parties will “heed to the call to join forces in combating the scourge of party militias and violent vigilantism”
