Residents of Hwidiem in the Ahafo Region can expect to walk and drive on better roads, following the start of work on the Hwidiem town roads.

After years of near neglect and recurrent appeals for the project to see the light of day, government has come to the aid of the town, which doubles as the district capital of the Asutifi South district.

Government, through the relevant agencies, has approved the asphalting of 3.25km of roads for the town. The project, a success story from months of lobbying by Mr Yaw Owusu-Brempong, the parliamentary candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the area, is due to commence, bringing a huge sigh of relief to the townspeople.

While addressing Nananom from the Hwidiem Traditional Council, at an official ceremony to introduce the contractor to the community, Mr Yaw Owusu-Brempong expressed joy at the realization of the project. He praised the responsiveness of the office of the vice president in securing the contract. He also voiced optimism that the project will be completed within schedule, as indicated by the readiness of government to settle all contractual terms reached with the contractor.

Nana Osuodumgya Apea-Dwaah Boafo II, the Omanhene of Hwidiem, in an address, recounted the history behind the town’s roads, and bemoaned the undue suffering the people have had to endure while going about their daily activities. He, however, welcomed the project while decrying naysayers for saying residents of Hwidiem will continue to make tea out of the dusts.

The contractor on the project is Alexiboam Company Limited, which is an indigenous Ahafo construction company. In very brief remarks, Mr Alex, who leads the company, craved the involvement of the community in the work to be done. He warned against any acts of theft or vandalism on the site.

After a libation making ritual, Nananom led the way to show a parcel of land they have given for the contractor to set up camp. Together with Mr Yaw Owusu-Brempong and Hon. Dwomoh Mensah Robert (the District Chief Executive for the area), Nananom broke ground for the start of the project.
