Nana Osuodumgya Apea-Dwaah Boafo II, the Omanhene of the Hwidiem traditional area of the Ahafo Region, has stated boldly that the people of Hwidiem will no longer be drinking tea made from dusty roads in the town.

He made the statement at a brief ceremony at his palace where Nananom from the area welcomed a contractor who will be working on the Hwidiem town roads.

A week prior to the event, information had come through that, following recurrent appeals to government by Nananom and leadership of the ruling political party in the district, the Ministry of Roads and Highways had finally given approval for the asphalting of 3.25km of roads in the town.

While addressing the current state of the roads, Nana Osuodumgya Apea-Dwaah Boafo II recounted the only two other instances in the past when the town enjoyed bitumen surfacing on the roads. He scolded sections of the townspeople for their pessimistic posture towards the project, and in comments directed towards notable persons who rebuffed news about the road projects, for obvious political reasons, the Omanhene of Hwidiem did not mince words.

“We have suffered for long over the deplorable roads in this town. The road in front of my palace is so dusty. Some people even said we will continue to make tea with the dust from the roads. Now that a contractor is on the project and beginning work in earnest, we will no longer be drinking tea made with dust from our bad roads. When they made that statement, I heard it.”

Nana Osuodumgya expressed optimism that the project is finally taking off, and praised the lobbying efforts of a son of the land, Mr Yaw Owusu-Brempong, an aspiring member of Parliament for the ruling New Patriotic Party.

In brief remarks, Mr Yaw Owusu-Brempong expressed his satisfaction with Nananom and the townspeople for believing in him, and supporting all efforts with prayers. He bade the contractor on, and pledged his every support towards the project.

The Hwidiem town roads project entails the asphalting of 3.25km of streets in the Asutifi South district capital, and is being undertaken by Messrs Alexiboam Company Limited, a wholly owned Ghanaian construction company.
